I have a Dell desktop running Windows 2000 Professional
edition, a Toshiba laptop running XP Home Edition, and a
Belkin wireless router. The desktop is cabled to the
router, the laptop connects via a Belkin wireless card.
When I look in "Network Places" on the desktop I see the
desktop and the laptop and I can double-click on the
laptop icon and open up shared folders on the laptop
(although the opening process seems to take forever).
However, when I do the same with the desktop icon on the
laptop, I get a request for user name and password when I
try to open the desktop icon. I've set and reset every
password-related box I can think of on the desktop and the
laptop and I still can't find anything that this
user/password dialogue box willl accept to let me get into
the desktop folders from the laptop (in particular, I
can't get to the shared printer that hangs off the
desktop). What am I doing wrong? This is driving me
crazy; I've asked friends and colleagues who have
reputations for knowing their way around networking and
they're stumped.

If it is asking for the IPC$ password, create a user account on both
computers that has the identical username/password. Log into the laptop
using that username/password. You should be able to connect to and browse
the desktop shared resources.
 
Try this when prompted for a logon enter the appropriate:
machinename\user id
password
example: your desktop machine name is desktop and you
login in as JoeUser with a password of fullAccess
When prompted for user id and password you would enter:

desktop\JoeUser
fullAccess

The log-in window doesn't actually say "IPC$." Does that
matter? In any case, I never tried setting up the
username/password on BOTH machines. I'll try that when
I'm back home tonight,
 
I have the opposite problem. My home system runs ME and
it is connected to a router with DSL. I connect my laptop
with 2000 Professional via a cable to the router, though I
also intend to use a wireless connection. How does each
have to be configured to make this work?
 
You should go to the properties for either Network or My Computer on the XP computer (i can't remember which one) and change it so that you are set to share files. I think it is like a hyperlink that you click on that says Allow sharing of my files or something like that.
 
This is a question for the Windows ME and Windows 2000 Pro
Networking guru. How did you do it? I've got a Dell
Dimension Desktop with Windows ME and a Dell Latitude
laptop with Windows 2000 Professional. I'm using a simple
3Com HomeConnect hub with a Linksys adapter in the desktop
and a Xircom modem/ethernet card in the laptop.

The desktop can "see" the laptop just fine (copy files,
etc.) but the laptop can't "see" the desktop. I've
checked and tested everything I can think of (workgroups,
netbios, IP addresses, user setup, file sharing,
troubleshooting web sites, etc. Out of frustration, I've
even tried a direct cable network connection via parallel
printer port and that doesn't work either.

Help!
