I have a XP Home machine downstairs where the Router is and the RR cable
modem is and have a XP Pro Machine upstairs. Looking for the best cable
hookup to share the internet and share files between each machine. Would I
connect from the cable box to the Router and then connect both mschines to
the router.

Yes. The router's Internet or WAN port goes to the cable modem.
Each of the PCs goes to a LAN port.
