I have got a broadband ADSL connection to the internet and
have two PCs both with XP Home Edition. Using the Home
Networking wizard I can share the Internet connection via
the ADSL modem but I can't see the either computer in a
workgroup and so can't share files although I can ping the
IP addresses.

anyone got any ideas?

Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols

Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on both computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

check if both pcs have same workgroup, although it should not matter. checkif ur firewall is configured with the IP addresses of ur pcs. if u usingthe windows xp firewall on the newtwork connection that may be causing theproblem. just disable it when u click on the newtwork icon on systray (itsthere somewhere in options/properties).
