We have 3 computers on our home network linked via a
Linksys Router to cable modem. One computer is running
Windows 98, one with Windows 2000, and the newest
computer (now experiencing the problem) is Windows XP
Home edition. Since purchasing the laptop in May 2003,
Windows XP Home had no difficulty in connecting to the
home network, and ironically enough the first two
computer were in one Workgroup and the XP in a separate
one and everything worked fine. After some months, I
changed the workgroup on the XP machine to the same as
the other two just for same sake, and again everything
worked fine for months. A few weeks ago, I had a notice
on the XP machine that there were new Windows updates and
I installed them and rebooted...there begins my
nightmare. Upon rebooting, the XP computer could no
longer "see" any of the other computers, and when you try
to access them via network neighborhood, I would get an
unavailable message and might not have access message
too. I have followed every knowledge base article I can
find on the subject. I can ping every computer in the
house, XP, 98 and 2000. I can view the internet, no
problem from the XP computer, but I cannot see them and
they cannot see the XP, but 98 and 2000 can see each
other. I have changed the names of all of the computers
and also the workgroups. I really have no idea what else
to try. I have checked and there are no bridge
connections in the network setup. When I change the
computers names, I can see them all again in network
neighborhood, but only one time, I get the unable to
access error and then the next time I go there, they are
no longer listed when I expand the workgroup...
AAAAGGGHHHH! It has worked for months, update Windows XP
is all I can relate to it stopping...and now I have no
ideas left. Any ideas anyone???
Thank you very much for any help!!!
