I have a Broadband connection via NTL and have succesfully set up a Lynksys
Broadband Router into the ISP and have my own PC (W2K on ethernet) and
another Laptop (WinXP on Wifi) successfully browsing the Internet and
receiving email. What I need to do now is share drives on each machine to
exchange data and also find a way of the laptop sharing the printer which
sits off my PC on a serial cable. I know how to set up the shares on the
PCs and am using DHCP on all machines including the Lynksys. I have a
feeling I need to have static IP addresses for the PC/Laptop but am not
sure. Are there any boffins out there??

You don't need to use static IP addresses to share printers or folders.

You do NOT need to set static IPs.

Things to check:

(First, I suspect that the printer is connected to your parallel printer
port and not the serial port)

Make certain that you are sharing the printer and other
directories(folders). (in Windows Explorer, right click and left click on
"sharing and security..".
Check that the workgroup is the same. Click Control Panel/System/Computer
Name.
Make certain that the Windows firewall is not activated.

you must install the printer drivers in each system that uses that printer.
then on each machine go to "printers" and add the printer and set default
printer(if you print from the icon the default will automatically be chosen,
if from the drop down you will be prompted for your choice.--

You need to create user accounts on both computers, and join the computers
to the same workgroup. Then they can share the printer and any files. Peer
to Peer networks require the same user accounts on all computers in the workgroup.
