when trying to connect my new computer(XP) with another
computer on my home network I see this error in the
system logs:

The master browser has received a server announcement
from the computer C1025264-B that believes that it is the
master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_
{69D966C3-A58E-40B . The master browser is stopping or an
election is being forced.

my workgroup name is the same on all computers.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Unless something isn't working right on the network, there's no need
to do anything. Master browser elections are normal, even though the
system event log labels them as errors.

To prevent master browser elections, disable the Computer Browser
service on one (not both) of the computers:

1. Right click My Computer, and click Manage.
2. Double click Services and Applications.
3. Double click Services.
4. Double click Computer Browser. If the Service status is Started
click Stop.
5. Set the Startup type to Disabled.
