I have a desktop and a laptop connected via crossover ethernet cable. I've tried to set up a home network both with the wizard and manually, with a dial-up internet connection through the desktop. At best, it works intermittently. Usually when I try to transfer a file (particualrly a large on) from one computer to the other, it works for a few seconds and the stops, with the error message: "Cannot copy file name: the specified netrork name is no longer available." When I try to "repair" the connection from the laptop I get the error: "The following steps of the repair operation failed: Renewing the IP address." Icons in the taskbar on the laptop indicate the network and internet connections are still active, but I cannot use either one . Can anyone help

You could be having collision problems over your Crossover cable as well as conflicting settings bewteen your NIC's (Network Interface Cards). You should check that both your NIC's have the same speed settings (both Auto if you can) or something along the lines of 10MBps Half-Duplex, 100Mps Full Duplex Etc.

The error message you specified is a classic example of an intermitant network connection, or simply a 'bad setup'.

It might be worth investing in 4-port 10/100 Mbps Hub, they are not very expensive and can solve some problems. You might want to replace your Crossover cable first though - Just in case.
