Stuart

I am trying to connect my laptop to my desktop in order
to transfer files from one to another. I connected the
two of them through the Ethernet port with a network
cable (i.e. the cable that would have gone from the
desktop to the DSL port, not goes into the laptop's
network socket). I have also managed to setup a home
network, but I can't work out why nothing is happening.
Neither computer is picking up the other computer, and I
don't know what to do next. I am running Windows XP on
both computers.

If anyone knows what I am doing wrong, please let me know.

Many thanks.

To connect 2 computers directly you need a crossover cable. You can either
make or buy these. Then run the network setup wizard on both pc's and you
should be done.

Or use an inexpensive hub.
No software required, but you'll need two network cables,
one from each computer to the hub.

I am confused by what you mean when you say, cable that
goes to the DSL port, not the laptop network socket...
