I use a 128kbps modem on my computer. My dad whants
access to the internet through my conection so i thought
to buy a split and i did. I will be bouilding a small LAN
10/100 whit the modem as my uplink.

I want to know some basics before messing up my life:
1. will my bandwith decrease whit 2 or 3 computers???.
what can i do to avoid it??

2. Should i get a firewall like Norton Pro 2003??

3. Should i run a dedicated server???
what's the best logic network organization for my
needs?

4. How will XP work and what issues might come up as
problems whit the computers or the network ???

5.. any other stuff i should remember?

thanks in advanced.

It won't decrease as such. But all the computers connected will share the
connection according to their needs.

I doubt this would provide more protection for the connection overall from
the way you describe the setup.

Why do you think this could be an issue?

just keep a simple peer to peer setup as you are talking about.
