I had previously set up my two machines to network through
a mini hub. File Sharing and internet sharing were working
fine. I installed a cable modem for access to the
internet (previously a dial up), The technician changed
the IP addresses from static to dyanmic on the desk top.
When I later went to try and connect my laptop, the local
network connections could not be seen. I have used the XP
wizard to set up the desktop but cannot seem to find the
right stuff to set up the laptop so they can see each
other. The laptop does not see the internet either. Some
clues on how to set up the machines would be great.

The simplest solution would be to get a broadband router and connect the
cable modem to it, then the computers to the cable modem. Configure the
laptop to also get a dynamic address. Then your network should be back in
good shape.

There are more complex solutions that may be possible with more details on
your Internet and network connections but this one will leave you with your
wits intact.

Your choice. :-)

It sounds like you have a cable modem, a desktop, and the laptop all
connected to the same hub. This will not work unless your ISP is giving you
2 IP addresses. Richard's solution is probably the best way to go- replace
the hub with a Cable/DSL router. Your alternative is to install a second
network adapter in the XP machine, connect the cable modem to the new
adapter, and configure Internet Connection Sharing on the new adapter. Then
the laptop can share the connection through the hub as before.
