Hello,

I have been able to setup a simple home file sharing
netwrok with Windows XP running on all machines. However,
how do I setup a laptop running 2000 to work within the
same network?

Just join it to the same workgroup in My Computer properties > Computer
Name.

Also, you may need to set the network card to obtain an ip address and dns
automatically by going into Dial Up and Networking connections, choosing the
Network Card > Properties > TCP/IP Properties.

What is the solution if the laptop running windows 2000 is
used at the office and assigned to a domain?

There are posts about this topic daily on this NG. In my opinion, if one
does not own the laptop - it was provided by employer for use by employee
while in employer's domain - they should NOT connect it to their home
network. Again, this is MY OPINION as I am a network admin, and I see these
posts everyday and they irk me. Do people have any idea the potential
security problems caused when they do this? I am fighting to keep viruses
out of my company constantly, I don't need users welcoming trojans and worms
in easily by taking their computers off the domain and then asking if they
can re-join the domain later. If a user somehow gains admin access to their
laptop and unjoins the domain, that system will not be allowed back on the
domain until it is fdisked and re-imaged. Severe, but necessary.

You might say you just want to share a printer and some files, but how can
your network admin know your little rinky-dink home network is secure and
virus free?
I would be more than welcome to answer any criticism this post might
generate.
