HOME NETWORK SLOWDOWN

I got a small home network of 5 computers, all running on
Win XP except for one running on Win 98.
When transferring large files from one computer to
another the network slows down to a crawl (8% of the
bandwidth, rather than 80% + all lights on the hub flicker)
whenever all computers are running. But returns back to
normal when any two computers are running. note: i got the
same results when i alone was using the network, with all
or 2 computers running.
Why is this happening? Is it a virus? or some XP hanky
panky going on in the background?

If you are using a "hub" this would be expected.
You should use a "switch" instead.
A hub will broadcast all packets to all compiters, a
switch will foward the packets only to the correct
computer.
