Home Network Setup Problem

I am trying to network two home computers together. My
setup is a cable modem connected to a router, and the two
compueters connect to the router. Both computers are
running XP Home.

I have followed the instructions on the Microsoft web
site for setting up a network. The only devistion was
where the web site said to put in a fixed IP address for
the computer. That did not work so I reverted back to
dynamic assignment.

When I completed the process, including file sharing
enabling, I went to Newtork Places and it was empty. I
tried to View Computer Workgroups and received the
message "Home is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator ... etc"

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

Thanks

It sounds to me like you are not getting an IP address
assigned to the computers via your router, click on
start>run and type cmd <enter> at the command prompt type
"ipconfig /all" without the quotes and make sure that both
computers are on the same network. i.e. 192.168.0.x. If
they are, then make sure they are both on the same
workgroup name. i.e. home or mshome. The default for
microsoft is MSHOME. you said in your post that "home" is
not available so I know that at least one is on the home
workgroup. Is the other one there too. If none of that
works, let us know a little more about your network, what
kind of router, wired or wireless, what make and model,
............

Alan,

Both computers are set for HOME workgroup. I ran the
file suggested on each computer and found that they are
indeed linked to the router.
Router IP address is 192.168.1.1
Computer #1 is 192.168.1.2
Computer #2 is 192.168.1.3
One interesting display from both computers when I ran
this command, under Windows IP configuration both have NO
beside IP Routing Enabled and WINS proxy enabled.

My cable modem is a COM21 Doxport 1110
My Router is a Airlink+ 4 Port Internet Broadband Router
(wired, not wireless)
I have a generic LAN card installed in one computer and
the other computer has the LAN port built in.
I can access the internet from both computers, but I
cannot network the two together to share files or
printers.

Any suggestions would be most welcome! Thanks!

Dick
