I have XP Pro on my laptop and XP Home on a desktop.
They both connect to a hub which goes to a DSL line.
Both can access the Internet with no problem.

Each also has a second Ethernet card and a crossover
Ethernet cable that connects the two.

The laptop can print to the printer that is connected to
the desktop, but it is very slow.

I can see files on the desktop from the laptop, but that
process is slow as well. The desktop cannot see files on
the laptop, even though I have sharing enabled.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jack

I am wondering why you have a 2nd NIC in each machine. Why
not use the single through the hub.

seconded - why are you connecting this way?

are the 2 machine using wifi to get to the net, but they
are also wired together?

watch your subnet number and route or you might be getting
some crazy circular routes established. there an algorithm
called spanning tree which was designed to look for these
problems. i have seen this exact thing cause problem in a
cisco switch if it isn't configured properly. it's often
called sta [spanning tree algorith] or stp [spanning tree
protocol] and was invented by Radia Perlman <-- network
GODDESS!!!!

or you might have incompatible duplex & speed setting set.
last year when a friend tried to copy files across from a
server it said 40 minutes to complete. i changed his "auto-
detect" duplex setting to reflect what I knew it was [100
Mb full] and started the copy again. it took 3 mins!!!

moot out ...
