Home Network Problems

Greetings,

I have a small home network consisting of three computers wired to a
NetGear router, which in turn ties to a DSL connection.

Computer #1 - Win XP Pro - SP1 (mine)
Computer #2 - Win XP Home (wife)
Computer #3 - Win XP Home (laptop)

All three have had the network wizard run and set up in a workgroup
called "Home". Computer #2 & #3 can "see" each other and share files
,etc. However, #1 does not show up at all. All three can access the
internet for e-mail and surfing, so I am assuming that the NIC's and
cabling are OK. The Win XP internal firewall has been turned off on
all three.

I have probably "messed" around in some areas of the "Admin Tools"
section that I shouldn't have and am not sure if that is the culprit
or not.

One thing that may or may not be important is that on computers #2 &
#3, when I go to My Network Places, the first line displayed at the
top reads " Local Network" and shows a list of shared files on both
computers #2 & #3. When I try this on computer #1 there is no such
line. It's almost like the computer is not connected to the network.

On computer #1 when I go to My network Places>Entire Network>M/S
Windows Network, the "Home" workgroup shows up ( it takes about 30
seconds to display). However, when I click on the "Home" group, after
about 30-45 more seconds I get a message that reads "Home is not
accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network
resource".

I had read in other posts in this N/G that there may be a problem with
the way I am logging on at this machine. However, there is only one
option when the log on appears at startup and that is my name. I have
checked and have Admin rights.

I would very much appreciate any assistance that can be offered.

A correction to my initial post concerning Logging On:

I don't get a log on screen. I get the Welcome screen and then
automatically go to my Desktop. The only time I see a log on screen is
if I click Start > Log Off and then Log back on. This was changed a
while back somehow, but I don't really remember when or how. There are
actually several files in my Doc & Settings directory - Admin,
Admin.Dell (it's a Dell Computer), Gary & Gary.Dell. It seems to be
using the information in the Gary.Dell directory.

Thanks again for any assistance.

Oddly enough, I've got the same issue. I have four
computers hooked up with a wireless network and three are
visible, but the one that has the printers and common
files is nowhere to be seen. It can't see any other
computers on the network either. I am using the old
standby of "MSHOME" and they are all running Windows XP
with the latest updates. They ahve no problem attaching
to the Internet, and three of the four can attach to each
other.

Peter,

I just found something looking through some old messages in another
network newsgroup.Do you happen to have Norton Personal Firewall
installed on the computer you can't see? If so, disable it (manual
start - not start on bootup) and reboot. See if that makes a
difference.
