Hello,

I'm trying to set up a home network with a desktop pc and
a laptop, with my laptop accessing the internet via my
desktop pc. Both are running XP Home Service Pack 1a.

I've run the network wizard on both of them everything
seemed to go fine. However it does not appear to work!

When I try to browse Mshome my desktop pc gives me

'Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is
not currently available.'

My laptop allows me access to its resourses but my
desktop pc is not listed.

I've tried using fixed addresses ie. 192.168.0.1 for the
desktop & 192.168.0.2 for the laptop. Now the strange
thing is that I can ping the laptop from my desktop pc
and I get a perfect response, but when I try to ping the
desktop pc from my laptop I get timeouts. I now the data
is being received by the desktop because I can see the
received bytes in the status window increasing, it just
does reply.

I now all the netowrk hardware (cable, nic's & switch) is
working correctly, because I've used it all with Me.

Can anyone help?

thanks in advance
thanks

Try turning the Internet Connection Firewall off on the
network connection for the desktop. Firewalls are designed
to do exactly what you describe. Allow traffic outbound
but not inbound. Go to the Control Panel and open Network
Connections. Right click on the Local Area Connection for
your ethernet adapter and click on the Advanced tab.
Uncheck the box to turn off ICF and click OK.

thanks the suggestion Jeff

I've now checked that the xp firewall is off and have
ensured that my personal firewall (kerio) is not running,
however I still get the same problem.

I am having the same problem here! The funny thing is
that my new laptop did work yesterday when I first hooked
it all up but now I get the exact same message when
trying to access my network. The computers do ping to
each other but for some reason I continue to get the
error in access message...the laptop is running Windows
XP professional and the desktop is running just XP Home.
If anyone has a solution that would be great!

My situation is very similar ...........

I have two desktops running XP Pro & a notebook running XP Home. When I view
the workgroup I can see all three and I can access the shared drives,
CD-ROMs and a zip drive, but I cannot access the SharedDocs folders on any
of the computers. When I try to access the folders I get the error message

"\\ name of computer\ shareddocs is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the
server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied."

I'm not running the XP firewall and I get this message with Norton Internet
Security running or disabled.

I'm hoping someone will read all of our messages and post solutions for our
problems.

Thanks for listening!
Dick

I also have a similar situation. I have two XP Home PC's
linked together with a D-Link 614+ router and a D-Link
120+ wireless USB. Both PC's can access the Internet
just fine, but cannot talk to each other. We have run
the Network Wizard numerous times with many different
configuration choices, all for naught! Sometimes we can
see the other computer, but can't access it, most of the
time we can't even see it. Also, on the 'Host' PC, we do
not see the Network Icon on the toolbar and neither
compute shows an 'Advanced' tab to either enable or
disable the MS Firewall. I have found numerous posts,
chatrooms adn other help soources that mention
the 'Advanced' tab in various places. Is there some
setting that needs to be changed to access this tab? I
have enabled sharing on both PC's, have administrator
access on both PC's, modified the regedit file to allow
access by Everyone and still no success. Someone please
help. Thanks for any assitance. Cindy

Well, here is some news from my end. after posting the
message below, we went through the Network Wizard again
and found that the host PC could ping the 2nd PC as long
as bridging was deleted on both machines. 2nd PC would
not ping or see host machine until we disabled the McAfee
firewall (left the MS ICF firewall enabled on the host
PC) Everything seems to be working now. I also
discovered that the Local Area Connection icon seems to
be the only one with an 'advanced' tab. My Local Area
Connction is disabled, because it keeps saying the cable
is unplugged. We had originally plugged an ethernet
cable to our modem when we first set up the PC, but have
used the wireless USB ever since. I know this is
probably TMI, but I have had so much troulble setting up
something that is supposed to be so simple (and I am not
computer illiterate) that I want to help someone else as
much as I can. You would think that the troubleshooting
and eroor messages would be a little more robust than
what they are. Thanks Cindy

I'm glad you've been able to solve your problem Cindy.

I still can't get my main desktop pc working. I've now
connected my old pc which is running ME. My laptop and
my old pc can see each other with no problems. It may be
worth my while going back to ME!

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

OK Gang I've got mine working.

Here's what I did - on all workstations

Installed IPX/SPX protocol which also installed NetBIOS
Disabled Simple File Sharing
Created the identical user accounts & passwords
Right clicked on the shared folder - then Sharing & Security - Permissions -
Added each of the users
Rebooted all of them and was then able to access the shared folders.

Check this web site for detailed instructions.

I'll give it a go tomorrow.
