Home network printing while in VPN

I have a small home network running a mix of XP Pro, Home, and Windows 2K. I
am using an old XP Pro box as a "Print Server" among other things. Everything
works great until I connect to my work via PPTP VPN from my main home work
station. Then I am no longer able to print until I exit VPN. This is really
annoying because sometimes I need to print documents from work. Is there a
work around for this situation. Thanks in advance.

The predefined default gateway setting for TCP/IP in VPN/dialup connections
is to "Use the default gateway on the remote network". In this case, when
you're connected to the VPN tunnel, your PC attempts to find your local
print server via the default gateway on your work network, which can't be
done. Try changing the TCP/IP setting to not use this gateway; right click
your VPN connection, select "Properties", select "Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP)", click "Properties", click "Advanced", and uncheck the "Use the
default gateway on the remote network" checkbox on the "General" tab. This
change should have the effect of making your PC look for objects on your
work network via the VPN tunnel, but look for everything else on your local
network and/or through your local default gateway.

Thanks for the tip, I have been scratching my head about this problem for
awhile. I knew this configuration had to be possible. You may not believe
this but I contacted HP support for this problem, and their resonse was "HP
does not support printing in VPN connections". Everything works great now,
and I really appreciate the help.
