I have a linksys router. I am trying to share printers and files between a
Vista box and XP box. I can see the XP box when I run network map on the
Vista, but it does not show up as a device on the network. I can see the
Vista on the XP when I view members of the network group, but get an access
error. I have enabled file and printer sharing. I have set firewall
exceptions. I have set the network to private on the Vista side. Yet no
luck. Any suggestions?

If you can see but access, it could be the permission issue. Make sure you
have assign permission in the Security tab not only Sharing. or this link
may help,

Vista Permission IssuesCan I assume the external drive used to be connecting
to other computer and you just re-connect it the the Vista? Check the
permission using this command: . ...

Did you run the Network Setup Wizard on the XP computer?

Try diagnosing the problem, using logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all",
"net config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer. Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (Download
browstat, and note how to start the command window as an admin in Windows
Vista!):
