You need to buy a router with both wired connections and a
WiFi of the appropriate version for your laptop hardware.
You will connect the router to the output from your cable
modem and the current desktop to the router with a CAT 5
cable.
You will configure the WiFi in the router for security
protocols and will be able to connect wirelessly to the
router. You can also connect with a CAT 5 cable to the
router when you want more security or higher speed on the
laptop, perhaps fro file transfers computer to computer.
You should set the WiFi up so that it does not broadcast an
open signal and requires specific MAC address and passwords
for connection. Read the manual.
If your walls allow it, you can get signals anywhere in the
house or you can put WiFi repeaters if your signals are no
good. The cable modem and router can be hundreds of feet
apart so the router/WiFi can be centrally located. You can
run a CAT 5 cable back to the desktop if necessary or
desired.
You can run the cables exposed while you check locations and
configuration. After the network is running well, you can
run cables in the walls if necessary. You may want an
electrician to do this if it is a big job.
But in modern construction, WiFi has no problem with 100-150
feet with wood and dry wall construction. Steel, concrete
and wire mesh wall are harder to use.
Unless you want the neighbors using your WiFi, be sure to
configure all the security features.
