Hi!

Currently we have at my parents home 3 computers. one
Win98 laptop and Win2000 workstation for my dad, and one
win2000 for my brother. Dad can not share files from the
win2000 to the laptop without my brother seeing them
(permissions...)

Now, update is planned, and since win2000 is not
available, I have to go with WinXP.

The question is: how do I do that with WinXP? I have no
clue as I'm not going to buy win server there to get
domain, but without that WinXP offers no permissions no
matter if it's WinXP Pro or Home. So how to get the
permissions back, so that can be done?

Hi Harri,

WindowsXP PRO offer same permissions settings (and few more) as Windows
2000.

All you have to do is have NTFS formatted partition or drive and disable
Simplified Sharing.

Click Start -> My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab.
In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing
(Recommended) check box and click OK.

Now right click folder you would like to set permissions on and click
Properties. Click Security tab and set permissions as needed.

I hope this helps you out...

I'm gi=uessing the drive is FAT32, not NTFS. You will
have to convert it to NTFS for the seurity tab to be
available.

go to a DOS prompt on the system and type convert /?
You get all the possible options and syntax.
