PC1 connects to the internet (highspeed cable); PC2 connects to PC1 by a
cable, and through PC1 to the internet. There is no router (didn't needed it
before with XP). Could someone please do a step-by-step explanation how to
set up a home network?

I followed your directions exactly. No luck.

I think the main problem is the computers refuse to recognize the home
network (calls it an "unidentified network").

I read somewhere that the location type should be set to "private". After I
do this, in a few moments, it changes back to "public".

I've tried uninstalling, then reinstalling the drivers for the ethernet
cards (the host computer has a Realtec card to the internet and an onboard
ethernet, the other has just the onboard ethernet). Also, I disconected and
reconnected the cable modem.

1. Purchase a router.
2. Connect it to your broadband Internet connection.
3. Connect all PCs to the router.
4. Run the Network Setup Wizard on each PC.
5. Should be all set.

There are a number of networking help sites, and for that matter, your
router should come with some pretty basic "This is how you plug it all in"
stuff.

Huh?

I had no problem with networking under XP. It's the same setup that I tring
to get to work now.

Huh?

I'm using the same setup with Vista that I was using with XP. I had no
problems with XP. I'm fairly certain I'm still using the correct type of
cable.
