I noticed that there is a NG for homebuilt, homedesigned, and pc-
homebuilt, so what is the difference between home-built and home-assembled
or between the NGs listed above??

Homedesigned would be a system made possibly not from the standard
look or materials
Pc-homebuilt identifies this as a PC forum and not Mac
Homebuilt because we all need the competition.

Howdy!

Home-designed is a system, not a PClone, made from various
processors and using various designs (consider a robot controller based on,
say a PIC processor ...)

PC-homebuilt is for PClones.

Homebuilt is where the home-designed denizens used to live before
the board-stuffers took over with PClones.

The home designers are heretics!

Have you seen a lot of homebuilt Macs? Have you seen any? That would be
an odd distinction.

Not to get in a debate about it, but you can buy the core parts
(AFAIK, MOBO, PSU, and possibly graphics), if you look for them. ,
however they are re-furbs or overstocks or the like. The rest of the
parts are more or less common PC parts

The PC groups were specifically for those that build PCs.
The non-PC groups were for other systems (including those built at the
chip and wire level.) Unfortunately, the PC-bullders took over those
groups too.

Yes yes and yes

That answer would all depend on your affiliation with the Apple Nazi Legal
Party.

Most home brew Macs are kept low key. Apple has cleverly kept the hardware
tied to the OS where IBM somehow botched up the same attempts. The result
is that it is perfectly legal to buy refurbished parts, assemble them,
boot the open firmware, but not install MacOS.

If Apple finds out you have installed MacOS, they'll be all over you like
a pitbull on a two month old infant.

Aside from differences between specific newsgroups, some snobby know-it-all
self-appointed gurus will tell you that *they* are custom *builders*, while
the rest of us riff-raff are merely *assemblers*. In this case, it means
nothing other than someone has a swelled head.

What? You mean no one else here designs their own multilayer
motherboards?
