For the past 3 days I have a problem keeping my local services running. If I
reboot for any reason, I have to restart many of them, like the Windows
Audio, Security Center, etc. etc.

I have Win XP home with SP2.

What are the services and what are the startup types set as?

Hope this helps.

weren't there some more details involved!!! I think you need to add or no one
has enough info to help. Should've referenced (at minimum) previous posts!!

Windows Audio and Windows Firewall should be set to Automatically start.
You should not need to manually start them. If they are not starting check
what they as a Service are dependent on and see if that has started.

Hi,

Click start/run, type services.msc and click ok. Scroll through the list,
locate each problematic service and double click it. Make sure the startup
type is set to automatic. If it already is, then go to the recovery tab and
set the first failure to restart.

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

Yes they are set at Automatic. In fact thank you for that link.

I went down the whole list and most of mine were set as the list suggested
for my Win XP home SP2. The problem was some would not restart after a
reboot. So some of them I set "recovery" mode to restart. I was unaware of
that feature before. I just now did a reboot and they all started running as
I had them set to do. Time will tell I guess.

I have done numerous anti- virus scans and updates as well as anti-spy and
adware scans. Nothing has shown up.

In the past 24 hours I have had only one Generic Host Process shutdown on
the browser so maybe something is geting better. The past 2 days it would
happen 2-3 times an hour.

Still one confusing issue. It will not let me resart the Windows
Firewall/ICS setting which I have set to auto and all the dependenices are
running. It says "error 5: access denied". According to the Security Center
the Firewall is active though. I just cannot get the Firewall Window to open
(since it is not "started" and "running"). I am the adminstrator of the
computer and this is only a home computer no network. I use to be able to
click on Control Panel>Windows Firewall and it would open. Now it says the
services is not running and then it trys to start it but will say it cannot
get it started. So that is still working properly.

Thanks I did that and then rebooted and things all seemed to start again. See
my comments to Gerry also for more details.
