So I'm walking from my place to the garage to pick me motor up after repairs and lo and behold there's a bloody great warship on the horizon.

Sure looked weird moored in Greenwich, it is huge.

Dunno why it's there but I took a few snaps, have a look.

On zoom with my G9 camera. That soldier looks armed to me.

Old and new defence, something of a contrast eh?

Walked past this, work ongoing on the Cutty Sark boat.

And lastly, here's some Youtube footage of American planes landing on that boat:

Seriously nice machines

Very nice Flopp's very nice indeed..

Those Harriers are awesome with there VTOL engines..

Nice pics Flops :thumb:

I'm looking forward to seeing the new carriers that are coming online in the next few years :)

The Royal Marine on the Flight Deck would be armed with an SA80.
Standard practice where ever the ship docks to have a ships protection party on duty.
This would normally include both Royal Navy Sailors & a Royal Marine Commandos detachment on board.

Oh & nice picture's Mr FBS.:thumb:

Wow, that's quite a ship, what a great sight, they're lovely pix Flopps :thumb: I enjoyed the video too - you've just got to love those Harriers, they always remind me of bugs landing on something, they way they can hover and move sideways, etc. Very interesting indeed. :)

Very nice pics Tony - a lovely sight :thumb:

Apparently its there to take part in the Remembrance Day ceremonies etc:

HMS Illustrious is visiting the City of London today till the 12th of November 2008, mooring near the historic Old Royal Naval College at Greenwich. The primary purpose of this visit is to take part in the November ceremonies, including the Lord Mayor’s parade and Remembrance Sunday.....

Great pix of a beautiful ship. It's the fifth ship to have the name Illustrious.

Wow !! Really weird !!

I've JUST found out that one of my uncles served on the fourth Illustrious, an aircraft carrier, and was killed in January 1941 when the ship was attacked by Stukas in the Mediterranean. The ship was not sunk but there was extensive damage, over a hundred killed and she was out of action for months.
Thumbnail below.

What a coincidence.

I took some more pix after this thread but never got round to posting them. The boat has now long gone.

These pix show what it looked like from my patio, an aircraft onboard and a helicopter that landed on the boat.

The plane on the flight deck is not a current RN standard aircraft.
Looks like the Harrier replacement possibly doing flight deck trials?
Nice picture of the Navy Lynx.:thumb:

Nice pics. Must be nice to live somewhere that has so much happening around.
