have a problem here.... i got broadband (tiscali 2.2mbps) and when im playin cs source, my ping usually jumps up to about 140!!!

any ideas on what to do... o and when i play it in the mornings, my ping is around 30 which is what i want :D
 
Just a busy connection thats all :) You'll be sharing with others nearby you, so you won't be able to get a great ping all the time unfortunately.
 
I agree with Ian, you are not going to get a great connection all of the time. You are sharing that with alot of people, less people are on in the morning and more in the later afternoon.
 
i have tiscali 1Mb and either really late or early morning at the weekends i find are the best times to download which i assume is because theres less people about

Nope, not really.

btw, ping isn't everything, long as you got no problems playing the game online, don't worry about it :)
 
do you have a router?
the fact is my bro has a router and norton antivirus 2005 and when he has hes norton on the pings are like 140..
when he turns them off the ping is normal.
 
i did try to turn off norton and play, but my ping was only between 10 or 15 lower

i'll rty it again and see what happens

Usually, the less you pay the higher the contention ratio.

yep, the reason tiscali is so cheap is because its 50:1
 
Nortons sounds fishy.

Try myip get your IP address and do a whois.

http://www.whatismyip.com/

http://www.whois.net/

I dont think ping should change by turnin off and on a firewall unless its connecting ya to a proxy. If your IP address changes turnin on and off the firewall its proxying.

A proxy will slow it down a little sometimes or alot during rush hour, but ya will have better security with it.. I proxy myself while surfing and it slows my connection some.

My old Nortons firewall didnt proxy me. I dont know what the new versions do. I proxy manually and use Sygate.
 
ok then, i guess i'll just have to cope with my high latency. even though it is high, i do not lag when playing. thanks for the whois.net site, its not norton or the firewall..... i guess i'll just have to put up with it :(
