Some win xp pro sp3 user has started regedit.
How can one find out to which entry of HKEY_USERS the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER corresponds to ?
In other words how can one find out what user names
used during windows logon the particular entries
of HKEY_USERS correspond to ?

While you are in Regedit?

Compare the Volatile Environment keys.

or create a dummy key under HKCU and then hit F5 to refresh and see
which HKU<SID> key has the same dummy key.

Current user is usually the last but one of the HKEY Users hive.

If you want to find out which key corresponds to each user simply right
click > permissions. The users name will be displayed in the security tab of
that key.
