Hitting Back button gives page cannot be displayed

Hello;

Windows XP with SP2 (Firewall disabled, and popup blocked disabled), IE6.

If I browse to a website, for example Amazon, then click a link to a book,
if I click the back button to go back to the original list I get "the page
cannot be displayed"

Any ideas what is wrong? this is a network computer with the same network
setting as all the others on the network. DNS is forwarded from the server.
But this is the only XP PC on the network. All others are Win2K and they
don't have this problem.

TIA

Bob

Grayed out Buttons and Menu Items that Don't Work:

It is a convention in many Windows programs and in the popular browsers to
"gray out" items that currently aren't applicable. So, if you think your
BACK button isn't working, it may be because in that particular instance it
isn't applicable. For example, if you just opened your browser and this was
the first page you viewed, then there isn't a page to go back to, so the
BACK button is grayed out.

Is it only a few sites, or all of them? Is the site or page opening in a
new window? Opening in a new widow can disable the Back button. In all
dominant browsers, webmasters using the <a target="_blank"> tag to force a
link to open in a new window breaks the Back button. The new window does
not retain the browser history of the previous window, so the "Back" button
is disabled. It does sound as it this might be what is happening on these
sites.

Try using the Refresh button and see if that lets you go back.

I'd be pretty suprised if any of those helped, but I'd like to hear it.
Please see the my response to the 4/1/05 post "IE Bug".

Did you ever find out the answer to your problem? I have a few computers and
I think i noticed the problem start when I upgraded to DirectX 9.0 I am
still looking for a solution to the problem though. Any more ideas people?

Does the page provide a back link or a back button?

If so use it instead; that's what they are there for.

---

No, the page does not provide its own back button. Also it worked before I
installed DirextX 9.0. It also works on other computers.

I have exactly the same problem and have tried all the fixes as per Microsoft
support pages, disabling security etc etc, but all have no effect.

I have 4 systems and the other 3 work just fine, but my main system resists
all attempts at a fix.

I am running Win XP Pro with all updates/fixes applied. The other 3 systems
have exactly the same software on them and work fine, so I believe somewhere
there is either a config switch needs setting, or there is a registry entry
that is in error.

Would be grateful for any ideas

Hi,
Previous posts hint that this is a problem peculiar to Amazon.com. I haven't
heard of a fix other than to open links in a new page.

If it happens on other sites...

Are you using the HOSTS file from http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm or
another source? There's information on the Back button problem at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hostsfaq.htm#Button

Also try:
Clear out the Temporary Internet Files. IE> Tools> Internet Options>
General> Delete files (and delete offline content.) It's often recommended
that the TIF folder be kept at about 50-60 MB (Settings.)

Internet Options> Security> Internet Zone> Custom> Userdata persistence>
Enable.

Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages to disk"

Internet Options> Privacy... are you allowing cookies?

Try disabling (briefly, as a test) any ad-blocking or privacy programs that
are running.

Hope this helps,

OK, so I tried all the suggestions and am finally getting somwhere. I also
purchased registry mechanic and ran that as well.

So, situation is that the "Back Button" now works but ONLY if I turn off
Norton Internet Security 2006.

I have tried disabling one part of Internet security at a time (ie intrusion
detection), but it doesn't work. I also tried turning off all of the features
of internet security (together), but that also doesn't work. Its only when I
click on the "turn off" button which either turns off or disables Symantec
Internet security as a whole, does it work. This is most strange.

I know this is not a symantec forum, but anyone got any ideas as to why
disabling all the component parts of Internet Security 2006 should not work,
but turning off security in one go does work in terms of allowing the back
button to work ?

Hi,
I don't have NIS around to play with, but here's some speculation...
[Assuming XP SP2] When all individual features of NIS are turned off, does
anything from NIS show in IE> Tools> Manage add-ons? How about IE> View>
Toolbars?

When you think that you've turned off NIS, are any NIS components shown as
running processs or applications?

Otherwise, I'd look at these features:
[Firewall] Gives you control over all incoming and outgoing Internet
traffic.
Prevents confidential information from being sent without your permission.
(Browser privacy?)

I have been fighting this problem ("page expired" after using "back") for
some time. I also use NIS 2006 with XP SP2 (all updates, etc.) On my other
computers, I do not use NIS 2006 and do not have this problem. Today, I
added the URL to trusted sites and now that site works correctly. Perhaps
someone out there will use this tidbit to reveal what the true solution might
be. None of the other suggestions have had any effect.

I'm having the same issue. I have XP 2002 SP1 with IE version 6. I'm
running spy sweeper and Zone Alarm security suite. I have tried the fixes I
have found on the net and adding the URL to the trusted site with no luck. I
also tried turning off ZA and SS and still got the Warning: Page has
expired.....
This mostly happening on a employment site (no password or registration
required), but does once in a while happen on other web sites. My wife and
son also have accounts on this computer and if I go to the same sites on
thier accounts I can move aound the sites without any problems. There
shouldn't be any difference in our settings as we only use my account when we
are on the computer.
Thanks for any help

This can happen if you have ADWARE sites (like doubleclick) in a hosts file linked to 127.0.0.1.
When you used a link, you went right by the doubleclick ad, but as you go back, you get the page
where doubleclick is blocked.
To see if this is happening, click the down arrow next to the BACK button to see if there is an
adware page between the one you are on and the one you want to go to.

Thanks for responding.
I just checked it and the main page of the site I was at is the only
thing that came up when I clicked on the down arrow.
