Hitachi Seagate periodic calibration noises

I hear these drives make weird noises at regular intervals due to
some kind of calibration procedure.

What up with that ?

People want quiet drives and they add weird noises ? I also read
where DVD burner manufacturers specifically state not to use a hard
drive that uses disruptive calibrations with their burners.

That is historic information. Modern drives only recalibrate when
there is no activity. Modern burners can tolerate loss of streaming.

Yeah, rather stupid design choice. Some buy Samsungs which dont do that.

Those drives shouldnt be doing recals when the drive is being
used except when it cant read the data off the platters properly.

And modern DVD burners dont mind occasional delays now anyway.

However they do make odd noises. I still find myself occasionally looking
for the cat.
