$59 for a 160GB drive sounds very good and Hitachi has been some good
reviews. Does anyone have direct experience with the particular model
offered this week at CompUSA? I'm thinking of picking up a pair of
them for a RAID 1 setup.

Thanks,
Bill

If they ever come clean on just what the problem was with the IBM
drives, I'll consider buying their drives. Until then, not.

Don't touch the damn things - not even with a bargepole.

They are STILL failing left, right and centre and are STILL absolute
pigs to work with.

And as for advanced technical support from Hitachi - forget it.

They're cheap for a reason. If your data is also "cheap" then get one.
If you value your data, spend a little more and get a Seagate.

Same here. The main problem is not that they had/have a problem.
The main problem is them lying about it. Cost me several days
of work and 2 drives at a time when I did not have much money.

Those IBM/Hitachi drives are not plagued by the problems of the IBM
75GXP series.

$59 for 160GB is an outstanding price if there's no rebate, otherwise
it's merely a good, and drives this size are offered for $50-60 after
rebate several times a year, often by Fry's Electronics, typically
Seagates (5-year warranty). Fry's is better to deal with than CompUSA
and doesn't charge 15% restocking fees on most items.

Don't believe a word of it.

IBM / Hitachi (even the very latest drives) are still the number one
drive for problems. They (as a whole) make up the vast majority of
recovery work I get in.

You want to take a chance, go for it.

But for the sake of $20 or whatever, I know I would opt for a Seagate.

But it's a free world.

Does that reflect the quality of the drives or does it reflect their
prevalence in the market you serve?

Actually you'd save a bit.

What percent of them have failed after 1 year verses other brands?

What are the 2 most common failure modes for the Hitachi drives you've examined?

Your anti-IBM slime campaign has now been widely discredited.

That's flat false. Only the anit-IBM slimers so claim.
