Hit counter not working

i installed a hit counter as instructed. the starting number should be 16712,
but the only number that comes up is one (1) and does not change. What do i
do to get the hit counter to work correctly.

There is a folder called _private on your website.

Go into that folder, open the file index.htm.cnt and make sure that the
number is FPCountFile 00000016712

You can do it locally on your harddrive and then publish to your server or
open up the server _private folder and do it there.

Go Live and no FP extensions...doubt that FP's hit counter's gonna work
there.
