After saving a web page with a hit counter, it is sometimes impossible to get
the reset to work. The number either stays with the original number posted
or goes back to 1. Any suggestions? Server extensions should be fine with
server.

Open the live site in FrontPage.
Reset the hit counter, save and close the page.

Are you sure the extensions are turned on for you.

If it returns an image to the browser they have to be.

Great.
The reason you can't reset it on the local site and then publish, is because the "local" hit counter
files are automatically marked as do not publish so that the count isn't reset every time the site
is updated.

In other words, open the site 'live' and make the changes on the server.
Open IE, visit your site and choose Edit with Microsoft Office FrontPage.
You will be asked your username and password. Open the page where your hit
counter resides and make the changes desired. Close your edited page and
exit FrontPage.

Or, unmark the "do not publish" on the local web and then publish the
changes.
