History, url's, etc keep disappearing on bootup...

and it bothers me! There might be a really easy solution
to this but I have tried everything that I can think of.
Can anybody help me rectify this problem???

If you are using McAfee anti-virus, turn off the ActiveX part of Internet
Filter.
 
After removing all the history and a reboot this does seem to have resolved
the issue.

However - now I'm exposed to unsafe Active-X - what is the solution for
this?

Tools | Internet Options | Security
You can disable various ActiveX permissions there.
