Its seems as of late IE history is no longer running. It has been set to 3
days and never had a problem before. I run xp sp1 with all recent updates
and spy-bots S&D and Spy Blaster and Norton Utilities. Also Panicware's
pop-up stopper. I can not find any setting that would affect the history in
IE6. I also keep temp files cleaned up daily. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the info but no luck. Norton is not blocking activeX controls nor
is any other program that I can see. Also I am unable to delete the history
folder (will not allow) and I am logged on as administrator. I have deleted
all temp internet files as I do regularly. Any other ideas.
Thanks Bearcat

Read the instructions more closely. You can't delete your own folders.
You must either logon as another user with sufficient authority to do that
to yours or do it from another partition.

FWIW I have never had to take such extreme measures to reinitialize
my History. I think that as long as you take care about removing sources
of interference (such as the AV scanner that Don referred to and perhaps
even IE itself) you can test if the clearing has done anything or not.

Here's an excerpt from a previous reply detailing that idea.
(This was actually specifically intended to help explain to someone
why there might still be some AutoSuggest entries available after
clearing History.)

<excerpt>
You can prove that that has happened by
opening a command prompt window and navigating to the
History.IE5 subdirectory and verifying that all its subdirectories
have been deleted and that its index.dat file has been reinitialized.

For example, enter
cd /d %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\History\History.IE5
dir/ad
notepad index.dat
and then do finds for Visited:

In some cases it may be that you will see residual information
in the index.dat file and in some cases you may see that it
contains URLs from your Favorites. The only way that I know
of dealing with those cases are to delete the index.dat file
manually and delete the associated Favorites. In order to
delete the index.dat file you would need to do it from another
account or another operating system.

If you see subdirectories that means that something interfered
with the Clear History function. A common cause of that
is certain third-party programs, including especially virus scanners.
To avoid this possibility we recommend that you shutdown all
programs and use the Internet Properties tool instead of
IE's Internet Options tool to do the Clear History. E.g.
Run... (press Win-R and enter) control inetcpl.cpl
and then press Alt-H.
</excerpt>

Good luck

Thanks Robert
I did indeed misread the instructions and will keep them for the future.
Strangely enough though before I retried deleting the history folder I
merely shut down all programs not just IE & OE and re-deleted again the temp
internet files by the control panel > restarted > and now it seems the
history folder has re-initialized. I have never had Norton's AV interfere
before (Although I know others have had problems). I will research this
problem with all of my programs that run in the background and try to pin
point the guilty party.
Thanks Bearcat
