I am using IE 6.0.

My history folder is supposed to keep the URLs for 20 days.

But recently I've noticed that when I click I don't get any history.

I'm not sure what the problem is. Any ideas?

Hi MB :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

and......

Run regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER|Software|Microsoft|Internet Explorer|Main

and insure that Save_Session_History_On_Exit is marked YES and not NO. (I
just checked mine, and it is set to NO by default).

Also try slipping down to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER|Software|Microsoft|Internet Explorer|TypedURLs

or.............

It could be that the History folder has become damaged or corrupted, try
deleting the folder, then reboot and a new one will be created.

As you do not mention the version of Windows you are using, I will have to
guess on this:

History folder corrupted -

For W98 (W98se) proceed as follows as per Sandi's site:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree

1) Start>Shutdown>Re-start in MS-DOS mode
2) Wait for Mouse to be recognized, and for the system to stabilize.
3) At the prompt of C:\> type the words: "Deltree History" (Note: there is
a space between the two. Do not use any " quotation marks)
5) press enter
6) A confirmation request appears (Y/N)
7) Type: "Y" and press enter (no quotation marks)
8) Another prompt will appear (Y/N)
9) Type: "Y" and press enter.
10) Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to close out of the DOS session and to re-boot in
normal mode.

The same process may be followed for your Temporary Internet Files as well.
This will create a new Index.dat file free of corruption and sized at 32 KB.
In that case the command line to use will be "Deltree Tempor~1"

Proceed slowly and carefully, noting that each command and instruction is
followed.

IF you've been using any other method of cleaning files and stuff out of
the Content.IE5 folder other than the use of IE Options>delete files>delete
all off-line content> OK>OK out. Stop doing that. The aforementioned
process of using IE Options is the only safe and prescribed way of
cleaning. (other than the DOS Deltree command)

or..................

To create a new History Folder
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm (XP systems)

For XP follow the instructions at Mike Burgess' site as the process and
paths differ from W98:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
To delete the History folder and index.dat (XP)

Log on as Administrator and delete the desired <username> folder and reboot.
(or log on as another user that has Administrator privileges)
Example: "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\HISTORY"

You may also have to go to Safe Mode to delete files/folders.

I think I mispoke. If I click on the History BUTTON, that actually does work
fine.

I am referring to the arrow to the right of the address spot where you type
in the URL. It used to be when I'd click on that I would get a drop down
menu that would list recently visited sites. That no longer happens.

Any advice (or does the advice below still apply to that).

I *think* what you are talking about is the Address or Search bar. That is
a bit different. It could be due to a corrupted Search or Address function.
Try the following and see if that helps:

Make sure Auto-Complete is Enabled:
Tools>Internet Options>Content tab>click Autocomplete
Uncheck all the boxes for features you don't want to use
Click Apply
Then OK

Cannot search from IE6 Address Bar

Check the Registry to see if this file is there. Sometime during removal of
hijackers or spyware files in the Registry can get corrupted or removed as
well. If not, try adding this line to this part of the registry.

(watch for the wrap, it should be all on one line)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\URLSearchHooks]"{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=""

or.......

Restore default Search functions:

In order to restore you default Search functions, download and run the
program below. You will have to redo any customized features you may have
added afterward.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/RestoreSearch2.REG

or....................

Download the fix - Reset Search:

any custom adjustments you have made will have to re-select them.

or.............

also......

THe History Folder can be corrupted:

Free History Eraser from

History folder and a new one will be created when you restart.

Or the History folder can be deleted manually:
See: How To Delete the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files:

You might need to delete the damaged History folder- a new one will be

Secondly I found the registry item. The first line under name says Default.
The under TYPE it says Reg_SZ and under Data it says (value not set).

The line below this has your item but there is no "=" after the }. Should I

No, I'm using AVG FREE 7.0
message
I am using IE 6.0.

My history folder is supposed to keep the URLs for 20 days.

But recently I've noticed that when I click I don't get any
history.

I'm not sure what the problem is. Any ideas?

Hi MB :-)
Jan:

Still no joy.
As I said, the history BUTTON seems fine. But when I click on the down arrow
to the right of where one types in a URL in IE 6.0, nothing happens. No
history is shown.

Then it would seem you are talking about the Address Bar, where you type in
the information where you want to go. If so, then your Autocomplete is not
working correctly. Try this and if it does not work, then I suggest that
you delete the Indax.bat

How to set Autocomplete for addresses in the Address Bar

In order to enable the Autocomplete, do the following:

Go to Tools | Internet Options | Click the Content tab. Click the button
that says Autocomplete. Check Web Addresses and all other items you want
used with Autocomplete. Click OK

On the General tab look for the section on History. Set the Day to keep
pages in history to how many days you want to keep pages in the History.

or..........................

Autocomplete not working

Addresses Are Not Resolved When the AutoComplete Feature Is Enabled
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q230592#kb1

Work through the possible solutions at
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers4.htm#autocomplete

Then see:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1585442,00.asp

If that does not work, the do the following:

You might also try the CacheSentry: Free
http://www.enigmaticsoftware.com/cachesentry/index.html

"This is a program that fixes serious bugs in the Internet Explorer cache
manager (versions 3.0 on up through and including Internet Explorer for
Windows XP, and IE6). This program basically takes over the job of managing
the cache from Internet Explorer, and the result is your web browsing
session will be more enjoyable. CacheSentry isn't like those "web
acceleration" programs that hook into IE and attempt to make guesses about
your browsing habits. CacheSentry simply does a better job of removing files
from the cache, and fixes a few other bugs present in most versions of
Internet Explorer."
You didn't answer this part of my email which referred to your registry
suggestion:
Secondly I found the registry item. The first line under name says Default.
The under TYPE it says Reg_SZ and under Data it says (value not set).

The line below this has your item but there is no "=" after the }. Should I
be putting that in?
I'll wait for your response and then proceed (before looking at your other
suggestions).

Yes.....you can do that and see if it works. Just make SURE that you backup
your Registry before you make any changes of any kind. If it does not work,
or causes a problem, you can restore the saved backup.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Hi MB :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

and......

Run regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER|Software|Microsoft|Internet Explorer|Main

and insure that Save_Session_History_On_Exit is marked YES and not NO.
(I
just checked mine, and it is set to NO by default).

Also try slipping down to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER|Software|Microsoft|Internet Explorer|TypedURLs

or.............

It could be that the History folder has become damaged or corrupted,
try
deleting the folder, then reboot and a new one will be created.

As you do not mention the version of Windows you are using, I will have
to
guess on this:

History folder corrupted -

For W98 (W98se) proceed as follows as per Sandi's site:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree

1) Start>Shutdown>Re-start in MS-DOS mode
2) Wait for Mouse to be recognized, and for the system to stabilize.
3) At the prompt of C:\> type the words: "Deltree History" (Note:
there
is
a space between the two. Do not use any " quotation marks)
5) press enter
6) A confirmation request appears (Y/N)
7) Type: "Y" and press enter (no quotation marks)
8) Another prompt will appear (Y/N)
9) Type: "Y" and press enter.
10) Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to close out of the DOS session and to
re-boot
in
normal mode.

The same process may be followed for your Temporary Internet Files
as
well.
This will create a new Index.dat file free of corruption and sized
at
32
KB.
In that case the command line to use will be "Deltree Tempor~1"

Proceed slowly and carefully, noting that each command and instruction
is
followed.

IF you've been using any other method of cleaning files and stuff
out
of
the Content.IE5 folder other than the use of IE Options>delete
files>delete
all off-line content> OK>OK out. Stop doing that. The aforementioned
process of using IE Options is the only safe and prescribed way of
cleaning. (other than the DOS Deltree command)

or..................

To create a new History Folder
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm (XP systems)

For XP follow the instructions at Mike Burgess' site as the
process
and
paths differ from W98:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
To delete the History folder and index.dat (XP)

Log on as Administrator and delete the desired <username> folder and
reboot.
(or log on as another user that has Administrator privileges)

You may also have to go to Safe Mode to delete files/folders.

manager (versions 3.0 on up through and including Internet Explorer for
Windows XP, and IE6). This program basically takes over the job of
managing
the cache from Internet Explorer, and the result is your web browsing
session will be more enjoyable. CacheSentry isn't like those "web
acceleration" programs that hook into IE and attempt to make guesses about
your browsing habits. CacheSentry simply does a better job of removing
files
from the cache, and fixes a few other bugs present in most versions of
Internet Explorer."
You didn't answer this part of my email which referred to your registry
suggestion:

Secondly I found the registry item. The first line under name says Default.
The under TYPE it says Reg_SZ and under Data it says (value not set).

The line below this has your item but there is no "=" after the }.
Should
I
be putting that in?
I'll wait for your response and then proceed (before looking at your
other
suggestions).

Yes.....you can do that and see if it works. Just make SURE that you
backup
your Registry before you make any changes of any kind. If it does not
work,
or causes a problem, you can restore the saved backup.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the
above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Hi MB :-)

Jan

I'm a bit confused about this part of your email:

I can understand, so for now, forget that part. Try the following
and
see
if it provides more information.

Restore Internet Explorer Default Search Settings
http://www.internet-explorer-tutorials.com/internet-explorer-reset.html

also.....

Resets all the IE functions - for windows, hangups,

Start> Run> Paste this
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll

and then do the same with each one of the following..

regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

or.....open an ms-dos prompt window and type the following hitting
enter
after each line.

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

It works for Windows XP pro and IE6.

If still not joy, then continue with the rest of the suggestions I
provided
in my previous reply.

Hope this helps

Cannot search from IE6 Address Bar

Check the Registry to see if this file is there. Sometime during
removal
of
hijackers or spyware files in the Registry can get corrupted or removed
as
well. If not, try adding this line to this part of the registry.

(watch for the wrap, it should be all on one line)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\URLSearchHooks]"{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=""

First of all, what file are you talking about? What file is missing?

Secondly I found the registry item. The first line under name says

The line below this has your item but there is no "=" after the }. Should

Hi Mel :-)

Jan, et. al:

I think I mispoke. If I click on the History BUTTON, that actually
does
work
fine.

I am referring to the arrow to the right of the address spot
where
you
type
in the URL. It used to be when I'd click on that I would get a drop
down
menu that would list recently visited sites. That no longer
happens.

Any advice (or does the advice below still apply to that).

I *think* what you are talking about is the Address or Search bar.
That
is
a bit different. It could be due to a corrupted Search or Address
function.
Try the following and see if that helps:

Make sure Auto-Complete is Enabled:
Tools>Internet Options>Content tab>click Autocomplete
Uncheck all the boxes for features you don't want to use
Click Apply
Then OK

Cannot search from IE6 Address Bar

Check the Registry to see if this file is there. Sometime during
removal
of
hijackers or spyware files in the Registry can get corrupted or removed
as
well. If not, try adding this line to this part of the registry.

(watch for the wrap, it should be all on one line)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\URLSearchHooks]"{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=""

or.......

Restore default Search functions:

In order to restore you default Search functions, download and run the
program below. You will have to redo any customized features you may
have
added afterward.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/RestoreSearch2.REG

or....................

Download the fix - Reset Search:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/IEFIX.reg
This will restore your default Search functionality. However, if
you
had
any custom adjustments you have made will have to re-select them.

or.............

Repairs the corrupted or altered (spyware) HTTP prefixes

also......

THe History Folder can be corrupted:

Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm will delete
the
History folder and a new one will be created when you restart.

Or the History folder can be deleted manually:
See: How To Delete the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

You might need to delete the damaged History folder- a new one
will
be
created on restart.

Free History Eraser from

the
above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error

Hi MB :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

and......

Run regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER|Software|Microsoft|Internet Explorer|Main

and insure that Save_Session_History_On_Exit is marked YES and
not
NO.
(I
just checked mine, and it is set to NO by default).

Also try slipping down to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER|Software|Microsoft|Internet Explorer|TypedURLs

or.............

It could be that the History folder has become damaged or corrupted,
try
deleting the folder, then reboot and a new one will be created.

As you do not mention the version of Windows you are using, I
will
have
to
guess on this:

History folder corrupted -

For W98 (W98se) proceed as follows as per Sandi's site:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree

1) Start>Shutdown>Re-start in MS-DOS mode
2) Wait for Mouse to be recognized, and for the system to stabilize.
3) At the prompt of C:\> type the words: "Deltree History"
(Note:
there
is
a space between the two. Do not use any " quotation marks)
5) press enter
6) A confirmation request appears (Y/N)
7) Type: "Y" and press enter (no quotation marks)
8) Another prompt will appear (Y/N)
9) Type: "Y" and press enter.
10) Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to close out of the DOS session and to re-boot
in
normal mode.

The same process may be followed for your Temporary Internet
Files
as
well.
This will create a new Index.dat file free of corruption and
sized
at
32
KB.
In that case the command line to use will be "Deltree Tempor~1"

Proceed slowly and carefully, noting that each command and
instruction
is
followed.

IF you've been using any other method of cleaning files and stuff
out
of
the Content.IE5 folder other than the use of IE Options>delete
files>delete
all off-line content> OK>OK out. Stop doing that. The aforementioned
process of using IE Options is the only safe and prescribed way
of
cleaning. (other than the DOS Deltree command)

or..................

To create a new History Folder
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm (XP systems)

For XP follow the instructions at Mike Burgess' site as the process
and
paths differ from W98:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
To delete the History folder and index.dat (XP)

Log on as Administrator and delete the desired <username>
folder
and
reboot.
(or log on as another user that has Administrator privileges)
Example: "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\HISTORY"

You may also have to go to Safe Mode to delete files/folders.

No, I'm using AVG FREE 7.0
message
I am using IE 6.0.

My history folder is supposed to keep the URLs for 20 days.

But recently I've noticed that when I click I don't get any
history.

I'm not sure what the problem is. Any ideas?

Hi MB :-)

Then it would seem you are talking about the Address Bar, where you type in
the information where you want to go. If so, then your Autocomplete is not
working correctly.

Jan,

That particular feature is an anachronism called TypedURLs.
It is a 25 (max) element list which is maintained in the registry.
You can display it by pressing F4. IIRC it's actually part somehow
of the *old* IE4 AutoComplete.

Elements from that list can be included in the AutoSuggest dropdown
list (the new AutoComplete for Web Addresses). I think that there is
a TweakUI option which clears the list but I'm not sure as I don't use
that tool. In XP I have noticed that it also gets cleared when (I think)
History gets cleared using inetcpl.cpl with iexplore.exe not running.
That is its only association with History that I know of and I think it
is a recent change.

Elements only get added to TypedURLs when something is entered
in the Address bar *and* there is a successful open of what's typed.
We don't know yet if the user is actually entering anything in the
Address bar or if when it is entered a successful open is done.
If neither of those conditions are true then we would have an
explanation for the symptom (blank TypedURLs list).

It is not what the user seems to assume, a History of browsing.
That's the History Explorer bar (Ctrl-H). So if all that is done
is click on links or use the Open dialog (Ctrl-O) nothing would
be shown in the TypedURLs list (F4).

For an simple example of how it works enter in the Address bar:
javascript:1
and hit Enter. (1 and Done) Press F4 (that input is in the list.)
javascript:typo
and hit Enter. (Done with Errors) Press F4 (list unchanged.)
Press Ctrl-o. Enter: javascript:2 (2 and Done but not in list)

Hmm... apparently that typo is a bad example because it somehow
appeared later! I'd probably need to find an online example
(e.g. an HTTP 404 or a DNS error) to demonstrate properly.
Anyway I hope you get the point.

BTW if you enter anything else without a protocol prefix
it may be interpreted as AutoSearch input. Then, if search
from the Address bar is enabled and properly configured
and the search provider accessible and the search responded to,
then the TypedURLs list would be updated but only with the
URL used to create the request. YMMV. ;)

Thank you very much for the very detailed explanation. I do understand now
the association, and why/how some URL's may not be added to or show up in
the list. Heh.....another reason why I'm not too fond of leftovers. ;o)
It can sometimes be quite confusing, this business of the Address
Bar/History/Autocomplete system, especaily when you can't see what is being
done, or how, on the other end. I've tucked this 'lil Jewel of Wisdom into
my magic bag of tricks, and, my resource library for future reference.

Thank you again for your time and help. I really do appreciate it. :-)

MYSTERY SOLVED. TY Robert.
I had been using my list of FAVORITES to navigate online.

I thought those sites would reappear in that drop down menu.

It doesn't. After reading your post, I then typed in some (correct) URLS and
they did subsequently appear in that drop down menu!

isnt what mb was trying to ask was that when the down arrow is clicked on the
address bar it should drop down and show a list of the most recently visited
places?
Because the problem I'm having since doing the xp sp2 update is that that
feature no longer works, it doesn't retain any sites I've visited from one
session to another even though I have the internet tools option retaining my
history for 7 days.
