"History"-how do I get rid of it permanently?

Greetings. First time user here so I hope I do this
correctly. Opening a browser window; surfing around; at
the end of the day I wish to clear all my history from the
day. Go to "Internet Options" hit "clear history" and
close my browser window. Open a new window and there is
my history. I repeat this exercise and it does not go
away. Eventually I give up and reboot the system and that
doesn't help either. I've also gone into "advance"
settings so my temporary internet files are emptied each
time I close the browser window. That doesn't help
either. I've asked here before and was sent to Dell (my
system) and they just sent me back here. Any suggestions?

Some possibilities:
With no IE windows open, try it from Control Panel> Internet Options.

Try it from Ctrl Panel with NO other programs open.

Or you might have the problem involving Easy CD Creator, see:
http://www.purgeie.com/lockhist.htm

Or you might need to delete the damaged History folder- a new one will be
created on restart.

Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm will delete the
History folder in Windows 9x,2K, XP.

Have you tried....

Start, Settings, Task Bar and Start Menu, Advanced, "To remove records of
recently accessed documents, programs and Web Sites, click Clear", Clear

?

this worked for me on Windows 2000 Professional. I had IE closed when I did
it, but I don't know whether that matters.

Some more possibilities to check:

I've had the same problem erasing History in IE for a long
time and none of the usual suggestions would restore
normal history-erasure function, including accessing
Internet Options through Control Panel, purging all
spyware, and crippling any protective programs that were
running, and deleting the folder in DOS. (Actually the
last method did purge the folder but it would behave the
same way next time and require the same drastic measure
again.)

However, I then remembered that I had a separate "Internet
Options" screen available within my AOL browser and found
that it would indeed let me clear the History cache, most
of the time. Apparently the software from AOL (and maybe
other ISP software as well) can keep a "handle" on the
History folder preventing other processes from deleting
its contents. This appears to be true regardless of which
browser (IE or AOL's) originally went to the sites in the
cache. Callwave's Internet Answering Machine can also
sometimes lock up the same folder, preventing even AOL
from erasing it. If you use Callwave, you MAY need to exit
that first to re-enable normal deletion of History without
having to go offline entirely.

The path for deleting the history cache and other web
matters in AOL (6.0 for example) is as follows:
Settings > Preferences > Internet Properties
From there, the screens should look somewhat familiar and
the procedure will be obvious. Of course If you don't
mind waiting until you are ready to shutdown your
computer, you can usually get the normal procedure to work
when Internet-related applications are no longer running
on your taskbar.
