Hissing sound when opening/closing windows or the sidebar

I often get this short hissing noise when I either
open/close/minimize/maximize a window or pass the cursor over the sidebar.

As far as I can tell, this only happens when the sidebar is activated.

Any suggestions as to how I can get rid of this sound without having to
close the sidebar?
 
Not sure what you are hearing. Some laptop speakers distort the sound quite
badly.

Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Sound.

On the Sounds tab. Work your way down the sounds with the speaker sign,
click on them and then the test button. See if you can identify which one it
is, then set it to "None" in the sounds window.
 
Tried that already. It's not one of those. A glitch, probably. The sound is
similar to TV static, but it only lasts about half a second to a second or
so. The duration can vary a bit, and it's not always there even when the
sidebar is open, just about... I don't know, 80% of the time?
 
I suppose theres the possibility that something on the sidebar could be
using more processor and the fans are cutting in? You could run the
performance tab on task manager to see if theres a cpu spike when you hear
the noise or not as the case may be.

It could also be nothing to do with the pc its just that when sat in your
usual spot you hear the sound? I say this because I thought my hard drive
was playing up as I was getting a sort of grating sound just at the edge of
my hearing. I eventually realised it wasnt the laptop and the sound was
coming from near the kitchen hearth, to the side of where I sit.

Its an old cottage and we recycle, and there was an empty cereal packet
waiting to be made into eco logs. It turned out there was a " slug" !!
inside the packet "grazing" on old crumbs and the packet was acting like a
drum box and amplifying the sound.

Oh it's not a "computer" noise. It's only there when the speakers are turned
on. Or the headphones plugged in, as the case may be. Kinda hard to mistake
where the sound is coming from when you're wearing headphones. :-/

No CPU spikes, either.

I don't know if you have a desktop, or laptop PC, but from the
symptoms you describe, I assume you're sound card is integrated
with the motherboard. This can lead to spurious sounds, as the
CPU also does the sound processing. For instance, moving
the mouse with the sound turned up can result in a thumping,
or buzz, especially noticeable with earphones. For a desktop PC,
a PCI sound card will eliminate this sort of thing.

I think what's causing your issue, is changes in the on-board video
card load, which is reflected into the motherboard circuitry, and
injected into the sound system, or picked up by the audio amplifier.

Another possibility is an external sound box connected by USB.

I solved a similar problem years ago by that means.

....But that was in another city, and besides, the computer is dead...
