I took out an old Compaq Presario PC for my kids to use.
It had Win95 installed on it. The CD-rom was damaged so I
replaced it with a DVD-rom. I also updated the memory
with a compatible memory card. I'm trying to upgrade the
PC with Win2000 CD. During the installation I received
the error (0x5,0x1,0,0) and the installation stopped, and
told me to call tech support. Any help will be greatly
appreciated.

If you're getting errors from HIMEM.SYS during installation, try these
steps:

- First, remove the memory you installed and set up the system with only the
original memory that was in the system. If the installation proceeds
normally, you've got some clues now.

- Make sure the memory you added is compatible with your system, and with
any other RAM in the system. Make sure you're not mixing EDO and Fast Page
RAM (although this will sometimes work.) Make sure you're not mixing PARITY
and NON-PARITY memory (Parity will have an extra error-checking bit, and
will not work with non-error-checking RAM.) If your RAM is a newer type,
check for ECC and non-ECC RAM (same problem as Parity) and memory speeds.
All these things can make your system unstable or even non-functional.

If you put your original memory back in the system and it works, try to
provide some more details about the RAM. Is it:

72-pin SIMM or 168-pin DIMM?
Fast Page, EDO, or SDRAM?
What is the access time (stated in "ns" on the module, anything from 70ns,
60ns, 50ns, 12ns, 10ns, or even faster.)
Is it Parity, Non-Parity, ECC, Non-ECC, Buffered, Registered?

Try Googling the part numbers for this info if it isn't printed on the chip.
