Hello forum -
I had to do a complete reinstall on my computer (right now preey much all I
have is SP2, Mcafee, Spyware programs, Firefoc), and have only just begun. I
had a problem with my drivers so I downloaded one (one a porrly working
SLOOOW modem. Anyway - once I got my drivers fixed, I was able to update my
virus software. Immediately, if found and cleaned a virus in iexplore.exe.
It was W32/Sdbot.worm.gen.x.
Everytime I boot up my computer, IE starts as well, on www.msn.com. (Not my
home page)
What's going on?
Can I uninstall just IE and reinstall it?

It is not safe to have an XP computer connected to the internet, even during
installation, unless you have a firewall (preferably router <hardware
router> based).

When you install XP isolate your computer from the internet and from other
computers. Turn on XPs firewall BEFORE attaching your computer to *any*
network or the internet. Even better, get XP SP2 on a CD and install that
immediately after installing XP, before you connect your computer to any
network, or the internet.

According to the latest reports I have seen, it only takes minutes for an
unprotected computer to be infected with a virus or trojan if it is not
protected by a firewall and antivirus.

It looks like Uncle Bill has planted his standard spyware on your system. This is easily removed by doing this:

1) Lanuch your IE6
2) Now click on Tools, Internet Options
3) The item highlighted need to be changed. so just change it.
4) Click OK

You should be alright now (or as Japanese might say allight!).

Hope this helps.

I use non Microsoft products wherever possible which requires no activation.

I use Netscape 7.2 as my default browser which has everything I need for my work.

I believe in good Financial Management!! I do not believe in enriching rich jerks!

Apparantly so! I just did another reinstall, but this time I downloaded the
drivers onto CD from Kinko's and didn't have to get on the internet before I
was secure!
Question - has the look of this forum changed, or does it look different
because of my reinstall?

No, of course this doesn't work. The whole point of a virus, or hijacking
is that the option you listed doesn't stick! Besides, regardless of the
home page, IE shouldn't be loading when I boot up.
But this is all irrevelent since I did another reinstall and am now learning
that the ARS complete back up I did before the original crash is unusable on
my computer, since my only option for floppy drive is USB. Wish someone had
told me THAT before I reformatted the HD.

Hi Opera,

The look has changed several times recently from what I hear; I don't use
the web interface myself but from the look of your headers you're using one
of the new versions.
