Sometimes after using excel a while, I open up a workbook and am not able to
click on a cell. Instead as I move across the sheet, I just highlight the
cells. I have to close excel and shut down the PC to fix the condition. Any
help would be appreciated. Using Excel 2002 on a Dell Laptop running XP
Professional

Next time it happens, see if pressing the F8 key or Escape key fixes the
problem.

I just installed MSOffice 2003 Professional from a bulk license.

As I open up excel and click the mouse, the cell is locked in highlight mode
and stays that way, highlighting out-of-control. I have to
Control-Alt-Delete and End Excel all PROCECESSES.

ANOTHER INCIDENT RELATED OR NOT RELATED: MAY BE
When I first intalled, there was a conflict with a file XLStart from a demo
version. The installation program asked me to delete it; but as excel opened
up Book1, I was getting XLSart.RAR instead and all garbled.

First of all, upper case in posts in considered shouting and it looks even
worse when you just re-start old threads with 'same problem'

I suspect the issue is with the drivers from your wheel mouse. If you
re-install the drivers I would suspect you selection issue will go away.

You XLStart issue I am not sure about, but the location of XLStart in that
version (Normal install, not sure on 'Bulk install') is

C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\

Folders below the UserName may be hidden.

Your XLStart folder should have no 'strange' files in it that is there
should really only be *.xls, *.xla, *.xlt files in there. If there are
anything else, try moving them somewhere else and see if Excel behaves.

Also you could open Excel and go to Tools>Add ins... and uncheck them all,
close and restart Excel and add them back until you find the one that sets
up the error. At that point you can choose to try re-installing that add-in
or leave it unchecked
