is it possible to somehow highlight a field in a form
without making that field highlighted on that field on
all records? It could be the highlight thinggy, colored
text, or bold.... when i try, it does it for that field
on all records.

if i get an employee that has a special skill, education,
training, or something that makes them stand apart from
the others, i'd like to highlight it. it helps in
promotions, raises, and, i hate to say, layoffs. but I
don't want everyone's "special skills" highlighted, just
some. I also can't add any "super special skills" field
for various reasons.

It sounds like you are working with data on an continuous form. To change
formatting on a row-by-row basis you need to use conditional formatting
(Access 2000-2002). This feature allows you to specify upto 3 conditions and
formatting options for when the each of the conditions is met.

To use, select the control, click Format, Conditional Formatting. Check the
help for more details.

CF is somewhat limited in what it can do but it is useful for many
situations. Stephen Lebans has put together a sample database demonstrating
some ways to use Conditional Formatting:

For a more robust solution Stephen Lebans also has code that provides more
conditional formatting features for forms - this also works in Access97:
