Hello, I am thinking of upgrading my system and was wondering, what is
the most powerful cpu I can use on my original mboard please?

XP3200 is 2200MHz on 400FSB

But overpriced,IMHO. Might as well stick to a Barton 2500.

I have an XP2100, and have decided not to bother with an upgrade - it will
clock to over 2.2Ghz on stock cooling. I shall wait until the 64s become
more affordable.

My buddy built an amd 3200/400 with asus a7n8x-dlx, we benched,
he paid 450$ for the cpu when it first came out, he bought the
P4 3000/800 for about 300$ next after realizing the hi-end amdx86's
are overpriced! Kinda wanting to tell him about the overclocked
lower P4's, but he still hasn't recovered from the amd3200 yet!

Every review on the web shows the 3200+ is/was a suckers buy! ;p
Could of bought a 2500+ and ran it just as fast as the 3200+ for a whole
lot cheaper! ($100 or so plus $25 to $35 for a decent HS/fan)

I never buy top end, it's overclock it or nothing, I got better things
to do then blow $300-$500 on a CPU that will be yesterdays *big thing*
tomorrow!. ;P

Cheers,
Ed

I am prob going to upgrade to a 2500 Barton in the next few weeks, but IMHo
i would wait until the socket 939 chips come out to goto AMD 64. Especially
in the later part of this year, when the "San Diego" chips are available,
they will be 90nm, much better and cheaper than the current 130nm.

Thanks for your replies, okay I have an XP2400 running at 2GHz on said
board, standard cooling, oh and 512Mb PC2700 ddr ram, can I safely o/c
this and if so, what would you recommend?

Your memory may be the limiting factor -depending on what it is.

The cpu and RAM should be run in synch on these boards.

The XP2400 has a clock speed of 2.0Ghz - 15 x 166 FSB. Try raising the FSB
and dropping the multiplier.

The revision 1.xx boards tend to max out around 180FSB - mine has gone to
185FSB but is not always that stable. Revision 2 boards should make 200FSB -
but may require PC3200 RAM.

Which mobo version & BIOS are you running? What make of RAM?

Doug,
the word is Sync, not synch.

Actually, Fiddler, the term "synch" is used as shorthand for the words
"synchronize" and "synchronous", one or both of which could apply
here. So, it appears that Doug is correct.

But what should we expect from a "kiddie" such as yourself, who is on
break from elementary school for the holidays?
