Oops, sorry, you're probably sick of that.

Remember I was originally after the 4490 scanner, then upped on eBay to the 4990?

Well, after some checking of prices and things, and a $300 Westfield shopping voucher (that at one PC shop in Whitford City Mall would only have brought the price up to normal) I checked with Netway Computers and.....got the V700!

Cost me $AU550 in cash, exactly what I bid on that 4990! So thanks to Billy Joel, I now have the big brother. (Shopping voucher thanks to doing some PC work for a friend)

Just installed it and now must learn to use it.

:-)

Cool! Sounds like you're in for some good times ahead!
Have a load of fun with it, dude. Try it out with vuescan as well,
it works a treat with Epson flatbeds.
Keep in touch: http://dbasrus.blogspot.com
and let me know how you go.

Checked out your blog, noticed your issues with the
Nikon scanner software. Why not download the proper
(US) version from their web site???

All done now. download url is not available
to general public. dealer sent me the right ones
and I've got all working fine and dandy now.

vuescan works well on its own, so I can use one or
the other. Nikon scan does thumbnails, vuescan
doesn't. And it includes GEM and other nifty stuff
I want to try out. But vuescan I'm more familiar with,
so there...

Still getting the hang of Nikon scan.
Different interface, a lot to learn.

Amazing piece of gear, BTW. The diff in
sharpness is night and day, really. The
dmax is a LOT better: it punches through
dense, contrasty stuff like there is no tomorrow.
And grain aliasing is nowhere near as bad as I
thought it'd be although of couse grain is much
more obvious without USM.

Still early days, a lot to learn, try out.
Then there is all the 6X7 to try as well.
Ah well, by Xmas I should be more or
less in tune with it.

So far, an epiphany.

Yep, I have the Vuescan demo, I'll compare with Silverfast which comes with
the scanner. Never previously liked it and found vuescan better, but will do
proper tests.

6x7! Which scanner do you have? I thought the regular film scanners did only
35mm and later models cost a heap!

Got a 4990 Epson. And a recent addition:
a nikon 9000. Been saving for it for 4 years!
4 very long years. Started looking for
a 8000, then it became a 9000...

Yes, It's the Nikon I was thinking about.

With that, the 4990 is perfect for everything else. By the time I can afford
a Nikon it'll be up to the 10,000 model! And by then all my film will have
disintegrated.

:-)

But have fun and I'll check your website for pics.

Glad to hear it's sorted out, but I thought
the internet was the same all over the world.

I thought a Google search would work the
same... anywhere. Well, maybe different
in China...

If the URL is available here in the USA, why
not in your locale? Call me very confused.

you just don't know how retail works in Australia.
If I buy a product which has a distributor here, I
have to get any support for that product from here as
well. Otherwise warranty is void. I also have to
register the product here or the warranty will also void.

Not that they'd be looking over my shoulder while
I'm downloading or anything but this way they also
get to know their shipping sent something to Australia
with only Japanese versions of the software.

Maybe it'll avoid a similar problem in future. After
all: they can't fix what they don't know is wrong, no?

The internet, man. The internet. That's where
this kind of software comes from.

When I get a new computer toy (printer, scanner,
what-not) I usually don't bother with the CDs that
come with it. I usually go straight to the manufacturers'
web site and download the latest driver.

Is the internet that different in Oz? It takes about
five clicks (from www.nikonusa.com) to get the
drivers for the Coolscans.

Try the "Pro" section of the Epson software. A lot of folks feel it is
as good a Silverfast LE. The other sections of the Epson software are
worthless.

Yes, that is what I'm using. Silverfast useless as this version doesn't
permit ICE, so far quite impressed. Changed the orientation of the 'legs'
which drops the negative holder by a minute amount but it does make a bit of
dif to negs. Don't know yet about slides.

I wish the focus was a little more precise, though my V700 seems to be
set OK. The results so far have equaled or surpassed my Nikon LS2000,
which has been put away in storage.
