I have a HP laptop with XP. Recently the HD has become very busy, it is on
all the time. This makes my machine almost unusable because it is SO slow.

What kinds of things should I be looking for to investigate this problem and
hopefully solve it?

Many thanks,

Peter.

Peter,

You might go into admin services/services and turn off Indexing to see if
this fixes the problem.

try this: when you login the computer press shift key and keep press untill
the task bar is appear and desktop icons are in place...now try to see how
the computer work...if is better that mean you have many process runing at
the same time and you need to eliminated those that are no require to the
proper funtion of the machine...

Primary suspect would be some sort of virus/trojan/spyware
infestation.

Go to one of the following free online scanning sites and check out
your machine:
Bit Defender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Kaspersky Online Scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

Good luck
