high cpu usage on PDC

We are a school with 2 servers running Windows 2000, the
PDC has been reporting excesssive 8005 events the source
being mrxsmb. Nearly all the clients Windows XP cannot
log on so do but it takes ages and no policies are
implemented. Also the CPU usage is around 75 -100%, if I
remove the network cable the cpu usage drops right down.
This just started out of the blue we were doing nothing on
the server and had not implemented any changes recently.
We have tried a different network card/cable etc and it is
the same. Also the PDC is not connecting its own mapped
drives. and when we ping the pdc most times it times out.
I have run Sophos and we have the latest version and it
does not detect any viruses.

Any ideas will be appreciated

The 8005 errors are most likely caused by one of the XP machines trying to
become the master browser. Restarting the browser service should make the
8005 errors go away at least for a while. You may need to run browstat to
try and determine the problem machine(s). See: 188305 Troubleshooting the
Microsoft Computer Browser Service http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305.
You may want to disable the browser service on the XP machines.

There are two possible options to address this problem:

1) Change registry key for isdomainmaster and maintainserverlist on the
Windows XP
machines.

Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters

IsDomainMaster=False
MaintainServerList=No

2) Stop and disable the Browser service on the Windows XP machines

This will prevent the XP clients from participating in browser elections,
but they
will still be visible in the browse list.

The CPU issue is probably a different issue and more likely the real reason
while workstation are having issues logging on to the domain. What process
is hogging the CPU?
