Hi

I have a laptop running windows xp home, 1000mhz, poor
ram at 112meg but for some reason the cpu usage has shot
up and makes the comp run slow as hell.

I thought it might be because i wasnt uptodate with
windows updates but i have done that and its still slow.
I havent installed anything recently that would slow it
down and i have tried reinstalling windows (repair) which
hasnt helped so im open to suggestions.

just to clarify - CPU usage is always close to 100% and
this is taken up by explorer.exe if anyone has any ideas
(apart from reformatting) then ill try.

thanks

Three things

1) Run a full scan with an up-to-date AVP

2) Run a full scan with an up-to-date spyware remover
(www.safer-networking.org for Spybot)

3) Running Norton? Look here

.

Hi ido have norton which i have scanned with no viruses.
I have downloaded spybot search and destroy an cleared a
load of crap and have followed the symantec link and aded
the new certificate.

In addition, i am also running zonealarm (firewall) and
pop-up stopper, both of which have been running
previously without any problems

Explorer.exe in the taskmanager still uses about 70% of
cpu usage when idle, which surely cant be right and makes
everything slow.

I have looked at other posts and have reinstalled my
system files from the xp cd.

Even when i just load up and dont open anything (except
the above which are startup items) the usage is around 70-
80%.

Previously i had a problem when microsoft issued a dodgy
patch but this is not the case this time.

Any other ideas gratefully welcome.

With that small amount of RAM in your computer it may be
relying heavily on the paging file using up precious
amounts of CPU time. I believe the minimum amount of RAM
for XP is 128MB. So you might want to try to add more
RAM.

Technically it /does/ have 128MB - but there's a crappy on-board graphics
chip gobbling 16MB.
