Hiding (not deleting) a Legend Entry

I currently have a series of lines plotted on an XY scatter chart.
have check boxes setup in the data so that I can display any or all o
the lines at any given time. The legend always displays every singl
series, regardless if it is visible on the chart or not. I woul
really like to make the legend correspond with only the series that ar
visible at any given time. This will keep the legend from bein
extremely cluttered when I have a large number of series plotted on th
same chart. Other than deleting and then re-adding the series' name
to the lengend every time I uncheck or check additional boxes, is ther
a way to control the legend like I do the lines? I'm using Excel 200
if that helps.

Thank you so much for any responses (and to Jon Peltier's website wher
I learned about the check box method to begin with...very coo
feature!

I have a few charts where there are a lot of legend items, and most of the time not all are used. To hide the unneeded ones, I use the group and outline feature

Each range of data is grouped on the source sheet. When I want to hide this data item, I just contract the group so that it is not visible on the data sheet. Magically, it's not visible on the chart either. When you expand the group, the data reappears on the chart

McB.

I should make it plain that contracting the grouped data hides the series AND the legend entry for it

In a similar fashion, you could set up an autofilter which hides the
rows that don't meet your criteria to plot.

I didn't have my data set up in a pivot table, so the auto filte
feature worked really well once I figured out the specifics of how t
apply it to my data. Thanks again Jon
