XP creates a long listing of Network Places! How can
this list be managed to show some and hide others?

You can right click and delete any network places that you don't want
to see.

By default, XP automatically finds shared folders on the network and
adds them to My Network Places. To disable that feature:

1. Click Tools.
2. Click Folder Options.
3. Click View.
4. Un-check "Automatically search for network folders and printers".
