Is it possible to totally hide or disable the Deleted Items in Outlook XP in
an Exchange 2000 enviornment. We want to ensure we have access to all email
activity and I think preventing deletion will take care of this, unless
there are some alternatives.

TIA,

I would set the permissions on Exchange instead of in Outlook. If you open
the user in AD users & computers and go to the tab Exchange Advanced you can
change the mailbox rights. Beacause he/she is the owner of the mailbox
you'll need to add the user to this list and set DENY permissions for Delete
Mailbox Storage. For all the other entries you can just uncheck the Allow
permission.

Personally I don't like setting DENY rights but I'm not sure on how to
realise it in this case.

You can't remove/hide the Deleted Items folder as it is a special folder
which Outlook needs to run properly.

Please keep in mind that people who get spammed can't delete the those items
either.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the input Roady,

I think I might use Exchange's message archiving capabilities. But if I go
this route..

Can they still delete messages, just not permanently?

It seems like there would be a way to hide the menu options and only enable
the shortcut menu bar and turn off the folder list by denying that menu
option using something like the Office Resource Kit. I have never done this,
but pretty sure you can???

Any input is appreciated,

What message archiving capabilities do you mean? AutoArchive is manged by
the client and still needs "Delete Mail Storage" permission to function
correctly.

When you deny the "Delete Mail Storage" permission they won't be able to
delete any message.

If you disable the buttons you don't remove the functionality. They would
still be able to press the DELETE button on the keyboard or drag & drop the
message to the Recycle Bin on the desktop or in Outlook to remove the
message.

If you really want to prevent users from deleting messages you must do this
by denying the permission. If you just remove functionality it's only a
matter of time before they find another way to. Also removing functionality
is a hell of a lot more work and less manageble than adjusting one simple
permission.

If you want to remove buttons check my site for a command ID overview in the
download section. I'll post a guide on how to remove buttons in about a week
(to at the most)

Good Luck!
