I would like to hide my home computers computer's IP when I'm
surfing the net just for security's sake. Would that be a proxy? Or
is there something else that would do that? Any suggestions?

I'm on Windows XP home & dial up.

Thanks in advance.

Use: http://tor.eff.org/ but make sure when entering usernames and
passwords on whatever website you're visiting that you use end-to-end ssl
encryption.

There is no way to completely conceal your IP while online using only
programs on your OC. That would make it impossible for you to visit any
website or whatsoever. What you can do is to use an anonymizer service,
that will then be the only one to see your IP while no other site will.
(Think of it as a kind of postbox).

The only one I know is JAP from <http://anon.inf.tu-dresden.de/>, but I am
not sure whether they have an English version of their client.

Look into www.ultimate-anonymity.com. There's a one time charge of
around $14, but that gives you use of a list of IP addys, anoyminis
email and usenet mailing, etc.

Then you will reveal not only your IP number, your real name
and street address, but also your credit card number.

There are anonymity proxy servers on the net. If you chain a few of those
you can feel a lot safer, because you don't give out more than the info
you reveal in usual surfing, and you reveal that info only to the first
proxy owner.

To find out who you are they would have to force 3-4 independent, and
often very obstinate anon proxy owners, to reveal the information. And
you don't have to pay anything to anybody.

There is no security advantage in "hiding" your IP unless you are doing
something illegal and want to make it harder for the authorities to trace
you. Your IP address is how the internet works. Dont worry about it.

Rubbish Lordy.

Absolute rubbish. Or statist claptrap. I wince at your logic and hope
you never bother to vote.

Chinchilla, google "anonymous surfing freeware." The only one I've used
is payware (anonymizer). G'luck and let us know how it goes.

OK Without quoting marketing blurb, please advise how IP masking enhances
security when surfing the net "for security's sake".

I'm willing to admit if I'm wrong.

Also depends on what the OP means by security (eg privacy vs safety).

Sparky, I work with internet and SSL protocols. I do networking and network
management for a living. Besides programming, Its all Ive done since
graduation (in Computers).
AFAICT, "Anonymizer" cant protect the traffic between itself and the net
if the remote web server is not SSL enabled.

Unless I've completely missed something - say you are logging on to a non-
SSL site via Anonymizer, all your details must be sent to that site plain
text except for your IP address. Big deal. IP address is not important as
far as identity theft is concerned.

If the site is SSL enabled then there is no point using anonymizer anyway.

There is no big deal in revealing your IP. If you can give me a clear
example where hiding or masking your IP, increases security (in the general
kind of way the OP asked about or for that matter - in any other way) - I'm
all ears. I suppose IP spoofing may have been something to consider in the
past. Hmmm..

If you can't or want answer the request, why are you replying to the post. If they want to hide their IP address, that's their business. If you don't want to help the poster, just keep your mouth shut!!!

They posted here. They want to hide their IP for security's sake. If, like
one of the respondants, they are prepared to pay for the priviledge, is it
not useful to advise them the mya not be getting the additional security
they think they are paying for?
If
you don't want to help the poster,

On the contrary. I DO want to help to poster. Why waste money and or PC or
bandwidth resources on a IP hiding service that doesnt nothing to enhance
real security "for securities sake".
just keep your mouth shut!!!

Yes that is how people like you would help I guess.

Now if one of you nay-sayers can give me ONE single example where hiding
your IP address enhances security for normal legal web based activities
then I'll admit I'm wrong.

But if you guys really want to advise one another to use services that
either cost money, waste resources or worse still - reveal more sensitive
details to a 3rd party, whilst telling others to shut up - then go ahead.

Many people use the internet and are not interested in its detailed
workings. Thats fine. But if they ask for something that IMO is completely
unecessary, I feel its nice to tell them so.

I'm probably helping the OP more than you guys who would have him pay for
some service he doesnt need. Of course if the OP is doing something either
illegal or that they would rather not be traced back to them, then that is
a different story. But just for "security's sake" IP hiding is a waste of
time. And the less able you guys are able to cite a real world example of
how it can be useful, the more sure I am of my position.

From the website

Attention! The first release of JAP is downloadable free of charge and
already protects your privacy against most observers like your ISP, your
network operator, or your boss. However, this version does not yet achieve
the full security and anonymity that we strive for. It does not protect you
against an adversary who has the capability to observe all communication
links on the Internet.

Like I said before, IP Hiding services, dont prevent your details being
snooped at the remote site. This is exactly what the last sentence alludes
to.

Note the real benefit of IP hiding is on Privacy when you are "up to
something" (as I alluded to before), and not on "Security for security's
sake" as the OP requested.

There is no benefit from IP hiding as a general security measure. For
example there is not example of identity theft that can be prevented by IP
hiding. No one really cares about your IP for identification unless you are
doing something "bad" or unauthorised on the internet.
