Some of the sites I visit show a little banner which then shows my IP
address.
Is it possible to use an utility which will hide my IP address whilst
surfing on the net?
(I am using ZoneAlarm - latest free version)
thanks

No it isn't. You can't send a letter and expect a reply unless you provide
a return address.

Your browser sends a request to port 80 on the remote IP address (the web
site you want to view). Encapsulated within that request is your IP
address and the port number the browser wants to receive the response on.

Do a google on "anonymous proxies" (www.anonymizer.com is an example)
which, to use the posting a letter analogy again, is like using a P.O. Box
to receive a reply.

Not a utility (running on your PC), as your IP address has to be exposed so
that the server can respond to you.

There are proxy servers which will make it appear that they are making the
request on your behalf, though, of course, the proxy has your IP address. Most
of the anonymous proxies do not save the information.

IP address is the address computers use to send data to your computer. At
some point some computer must know you IP address to send you pages. You can
use a proxy server to fetch your porn for you and then send it to you if you
want, but the proxy will still have your IP address

I have found and use a little proggy called
all-in-one-secretmaker.

I have no idea how effective it is but go try it

I used JAP awhile back, before I upgraded to XP. It is one of those
safety-in-numbers proxies, so not safe from the gov'ment intelligence
scarfers. I never checked it for spyware and haven't yet reinstalled
SpyBot S&D.

I subscribe to Anonymizer, but you can use their Free Private Surfing
"type in the url" service on the web site.

Anybody have experience with JAP?

OK - I have myself gone and read this page - I have run this proggy
with XP pro for some 2 months now. I have tried the 'anonymous
measure' websites & they couldn't get me. I have not yet had a
problem.
Maybe I 've been lucky but go try it for yourself but do a restore or
backup first.
